Katrina Cottage
A Katrina Cottage is conceived to be a small house that can be built and installed on-site for the same price as a FEMA trailer. The US government spends at least $70,000 and as much as $140,000 per unit to temporarily house hurricane survivors in a trailer, after which the need for a permanent home remains while the funds expended will have been wasted. In contrast to temporary trailers, Katrina Cottages may remain on-site as permanent dwellings that can be expanded into full-sized houses. They are a realistic first step toward the solution of the housing crisis.
